Make Educated Decisions:
Most skin damage is caused by direct injury from photons of light during unprotected sun exposure and by free radicals.  A thorough explanation of skin aging related to sun exposure is covered on the Sunscreen Protection page in this section.  It will give you the right information to make wise decisions regarding sunscreens and the future appearance of your skin.

The Other Cause of Skin Aging:
Our bodily processes also generate free radicals.  As we digest food, produce energy, or use our muscles, these functions involve chemical actions that generate free radicals.  As our skin produces energy, manufacturers protective lipids, makes routine repairs and converts one chemical into another it also generates free radicals.  These free radicals can also damage cellular DNA, collagen, elastin, protective lipids and other components of skin.  It is estimated that each cell in our epidermis (the outer section of our living skin) has approximately 5,000 exposures to various forms of free radicals each day.  Some of these free radicals have more damage potential than others.  Most of these exposures do little to no damage, but over time a small amount of damage on a daily basis becomes cumulative and results in the significant physical changes we associate with aging.  Aging is, in fact, recurrent and cumulative damage.

Antioxidants can combine with free radicals to partially neutralize their damage potential and thereby antioxidants are damage protection.  Antioxidants slow the rate of damage to our bodies and our skin and therefore are an effective mechanism of anti-aging.  They literally reduce the aging process, making us function, look and feel younger.  Foods rich in antioxidants are stressed by health care professionals because they protect our bodies from the type of progressive damage that can lead to organ malfunction or failure.  Only about 1% of the antioxidants we ingest actually get to the skin.  Therefore, foods are an effective method of protecting much of the body, but ineffective in providing the skin with additional protection.

The skin manufactures antioxidants.  For example, the antioxidant superoxide dismutase requires zinc for production.  The antioxidant catalase requires adequate calcium levels within the skin.  The availability of these skin antioxidants can be somewhat compromised by our food selections.  Topical application of antioxidants can be the most effective method of skin protection and the greater the volume and potency of the antioxidants, the greater the anti-aging benefits.

Apresia products were developed with this science in mind.  Our Moisturizer is not just a moisturizer, it is also an extremely powerful anti-aging tool.  Our Sunscreen is not just a physical sunscreen that prevents photo-damage and secondary free radical activity, it also has powerful anti-aging benefits.

As an example, following are the ingredients in Moisturizer.  The items in red are antioxidants.

Ingredients:  Deionized Water, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Avocado (Persea Gratissima) Oil, Hydrocotyl (Centella Asiatica) Extract, Soybean (Glycine Soja) Extract, Evening Primrose (Oenothera Biennis) Oil (Gamma Linoleic Acid), Chamomile (Anthemis Nobilis) Extract, Camelia Oleifera Extract (Green Tea), Yeast Extract (Betaglucan), Cysteine (Amino Acids), Disodium Adenosine Triphosphate, Panthenol (Vitamin B), Methylparaben, Citric Acid, Propylparaben.

The hydrocotyl and green tea used in Moisturizer, for example, are 20 to 30 times more powerful in antioxidant benefits than the more commonly used antioxidants like vitamin E.  Each of these ingredients, plus betaglucan and vitamin B have collagen and elastin protective qualities and are used in the medical field to treat wounds and incisions because of their ability to promote collagen production.  No matter what the age of the user, Moisturizer will very significantly slow the process of skin aging and promote repair.  It is a smart cosmetic.

Because of digestive and circulatory issues free radical damage is 60 times greater for a person of age 82 as it is for a person of age 22.  During the first 30 to 40 years of life the skin has subtle changes that evolve around hormonal changes rather than damage issues.  The 20 year span from 40 to 60 has dramatic changes, and so on.  While it is important to begin protecting the skin as early as possible, it is critically important to protect it as one ages because the degree of free radical damage increases more rapidly.

The use of Moisturizer and Sunscreen are strongly recommended as an effective anti-aging strategy for skin.  Most moisturizers contain very little antioxidants regardless of price.  Additionally, a smart skin rejuvenation plan should include anti-aging products so the benefits of rejuvenation are not quickly lost to free radical damage.
